Woolwich Works has announced it will host a three-part Queer Jazz series, with the first evening of music taking place during Pride month.
Held over the summer months, Woolwich Works, DJ Tina Edwards, and singer Jelly Cleaver present Queer Jazz series; a celebration of London-based LGBTQIA+ jazz artists.
The event series aims to offer a platform to established musicians and rising stars through live music, jams and panels.
During Pride month, on Thursday, June 15, South Londoner and vocalist and songwriter Eliza Oakes will take the stage, as will Faker Villain which features Faye Thompson on saxophone, bass clarinet and electronics, Kavi Maraj on bass and electronics, and Dillon Harrison on drums and percussion. Their improvised performances draw inspiration from a diversity of places, including from electronica, jazz, Hindustani classical, ambient experimental and progressive metal.
On Thursday, July 13, bassist, vocalist and composer Isobella Burnham will perform her Caribbean-influenced rhythms, and Jelly’s Jams will join up with the BIPOC and queer-led house band for an open-genre jam.
For the last date in the series, on Thursdaym August 17, boundary-blurring margomool will star, as will 21-year-old jazz and soul singer, multi-instrumentalist and songwriter Akin Soul who has performed at festivals including Glastonbury, We Out Here, Brainchild, Love Supreme, All Points East and The Great Escape.
