A bespoke piece of art can add excitement, serenity, fun or drama to a room, reveals contemporary abstract artist, Zoe Beaumont.
Below, Zoe shares how to transform your interior, evoke meaning in your home, and reflect a piece of yourself on your walls with an original artwork.
Q: Why invest in bespoke art for your home?
A: When you commission bespoke artwork, you get a piece that is a personal representation of what matters to you. To the untrained eye, the work may look simply beautiful, but to the owner it can mean so much more.
I’ve worked on pieces where I’ve incorporated family members’ initials, used colours from their favourite football team or worked in elements of a photo they’ve provided from a memorable holiday.
As something you're going to look at every day, it's important that the artwork resonates with you and that you have an emotional relationship with it. This can be hard to get from a print of a painting or a poster.
Q: How can you find art for your home?
A: I can offer guidance and support to help you to decide exactly what you want and we can work together to create a piece that reflects your ideas and will complement your home's interior. You can decide on the size, colour palette and mood of the piece and will be involved in every step of the creation process.
My previous career in fashion and interior styling, store design and guest lecturing on visual merchandising at the University of the Arts London has greatly influenced my creative process. I understand how texture, space, colour and tone can work together to create a truly stunning piece that will elevate your home or work environment.
Q: What is your process for creating bespoke artwork?
A: The first step in the process for commission pieces is holding a design consultation. This is where I get to know you and what you like, where the artwork will go in your home and what styles you enjoy and want to see.
Once I understand what you want to incorporate, I'll create a personalised mood board and design brief that captures your ideas and influences. Once you’re happy with it, I’ll begin to work on the piece.
During the process, I'll share pictures so you can see how the piece is taking shape. This is especially insightful when creating abstract artwork, as it can really change when building layers. Once the piece is finished, I offer a framing service and delivery.
Q: How do you create unique pieces of art?
A: As a mixed media artist, I work with a combination of acrylic paint with layers of chalk and pastels to add interest and depth. Although I work mainly on canvas, I can also paint on glass, resin and boards. I sometimes use emulsion and glue on the base which creates beautiful textures and patterns when mixed with the paint, as well as using scratching techniques to reveal different colours and shapes.
Gold is a very popular interior design trend at the moment, and I often use metallic leaf to create stunning highlights in my pieces. This catches the light in different ways throughout the day and casts reflections, making the art come to life and creating a wonderful ambience in your home.
Q: What inspires your artwork?
A: Natural landscapes often do, but it’s not just beautiful places that inspire me. Locations important to my clients have also encouraged me to create pieces that represent their special moments and treasured memories.
I am also inspired by my environment. Looking at the weathered effects and distressed appearance of paving stones while on a walk can motivate me to paint or create. There are interesting marks and geometry everywhere we look. I enjoy both natural and urban landscapes – it’s a juxtaposition of inspirations.
The different colours, textures and layers of street fashion can also translate into a gorgeous art piece. Beautiful interiors provide a great source of inspiration too.
Q: Have you got any upcoming art exhibitions?
A: I have an upcoming exhibition at Stables Gallery Reveley Lodge during Easter 2023. I also hope you will be able to find me at St Albans Art Market in the New Year. It’s a great chance for people to meet with me, view my latest abstract collection, and learn more about what I do.
Q: How can people purchase your artwork?
A: The best way to buy my artwork is to visit my website, fill in the contact form and we can have a conversation. If you see a piece you like, send me a message. You can also follow my Instagram page to view a piece, get prices or book a commission.
