Gardens and exterior spaces can often be neglected as the poor cousin of the internal space. Often I have seen houses that have had hundreds or thousands of pounds spent on fabulous kitchens, beautifully tiled bathrooms, solid wooden floors and bi-fold or sliding doors.Unfortunately they are then let down by the view through those lovely doors of a quickly thought-out garden with an expanse of lawn or some cheap paving slabs.
If you have the home you want you should have the garden you want to match – and this is where a good garden designer can come in useful.
When you have the house extended, go into the loft or dig out the basement, an architect can help you make the most of the space. Even when fitting your new kitchen you may well have had a kitchen designer help with the layout and colours. Here are a few ways a garden designer could help you with your exterior landscape project.
Plants and Flowers
Horticultural know-how is a must. If the right plant is not in the right place it won’t flourish and you will end up with a lack-lustre border. A garden designer will draw you a planting plan based on the theme of the new space and the colours and styles that you like.
Getting the most from your space
It may seem simple to say “what do you want to use the space for?” but how often do you ask yourself questions? Having a professional designer to ask you the right questions and then translate them into a layout that works for your garden may be more beneficial than you thought.
Style and Feel
Having the right look for the garden is important. It should reflect you and your personal tastes as well as reflecting elements of the house and the overall style of the interior decoration.
Concept
What is the style or ideas behind your new garden, what makes it different from the others? In this project we took inspiration form the church that overlooked the garden and the coastal position of the property.
Master Plan
A scale drawing of the garden will be produced to show how the finished project will look. The design uses the shapes, colours and materials shown in the Concept.
Planting Plan
This plan shows where each plant will go and gives an overall impression of how the planting will look and feel. It also contains a planting schedule listing all the Latin names and varieties. Here swaths of grasses and flowers are used to create drifts and waves subtly adding to the coastal look of the space. Finished Product The finished garden looks like the 3D design, with a few adjustments along the way. This garden is newly created but soon the plants will fill the borders and soften the space.
