This year visitors to Greenwich will be able to see the stunning Mars art installation by world famous artist Luke Jerram within the stunning backdrop of the Painted Hall.

This November, the Old Royal Naval College in Greenwich will host artist Luke Jerram’s third and final instalment of his “out-of-this-world” installation, following two successful runs of the popular Moon and Gaia installations.

The final installation will feature the planet Mars, measuring in at seven metres, set within the Painted Hall, an 18th century baroque structure otherwise known as ‘Britain’s Sistine Chapel’.

The artwork has been made with detailed NASA imagery showing the surface of Mars and is scaled to be one million times smaller than the real thing.

Artist Luke Jerram said: “Mars follows on from my other astronomical artworks Museum of the Moon and Gaia presented in the awe-inspiring Painted Hall and allows a close encounter with the Martian planet.

“I hope that visitors will feel transported to its inhospitable desert wasteland and, in comparison, really value our life on Earth.“

The installation will also be accompanied by a sound composition by BAFTA-winning composer Dan Jones, including clips from NASA missions to Mars, creating a fully immersive experience.

Matthew Mees, Chief Executive of the Old Royal Naval College, said: “We are thrilled to present this beautiful and atmospheric work of art in our iconic space.

“Luke Jerram’s Mars will provide an immersive experience, sparking curiosity and wonder about our universe while highlighting the artistic and historical significance of the Painted Hall. This is an experience not to be missed.”
