1 The Midland Grand Dining Room

Feast on a slightly French style roast lunch in one of the most majestic dining rooms in London. 2 Vervian at Birch Selsdon, Croydon

The location of this roast couldn’t be better, whether you’re Croydon local or not. Found in the second restaurant of the newly opened Birch Selsdon, a grand old Victoria country estate set on 200 acres of rewilded land, you’ve got views of nature for days from the light-soaked dining room. There’s plenty of small plates should you want something different, or a roast of every kind of meat, including fish, and another for the plant eaters, loaded up with a host of comforting trimmings.

A plush chain of steakhouse with a restaurant practically in every corner of London, the Hawksmoor’s Sunday roast is also made up of delicious things plated up to be shared. The sharing cuts on offer change but will usually include Prime Rib or Chateaubriand. For sides, you can add on the ultimate comfort food – cauliflower cheese, or try rainbow chard with anchovies or roasted bone marrow.

4 Coal Rooms, Peckham

As a social enterprise, Coal Rooms reinvests over half of its profits in training and employment opportunities for the homeless. As a restaurant, it serves up modern European dishes, cooked over its bespoke coal-fired grill. Open for all-day dining, the venue's roasts are a couple of steps up from your average pub Sunday lunch, think ethically sourced produce prepared so natural flavours sing.

5 Manteca, Shoreditch

This nose-to-tail restaurant makes its pasta fresh, butchers in-house, and cooks over fire and coals. Last roast season, the restaurant put on Manteca Sundays, which were a lunch made up of homely family-style dishes such as traditional lasagne and Tamworth porchetta, paired with a selection of various wines not usually on offer. Here’s to hoping there’s a repeat performance.

6 Blacklock, various locations

A restaurant based on the chophouses of the 1690s, a place where hungry punters could go to feast on meat on the bone, for extra flavour. Blacklock is all about the meat, and on Sundays, the restaurant whole joints over open coals for a beefed up version of the traditional English roast. You’ve got beef rump, lamb leg and pork loin to choose from. Vegans and vegetarians can get stuck into a whole roast celeriac too.

7 The Marksman, Hackney

A popular spot for people who’ve just been squashed at the Columbia Road Flower Market, The Markman has Sunday roast dishes for sharing as well as for those who want a plate to themselves. The very British roast options include smoke haddock and pollock fishcake or pressed celeriac pie, with the likes of guinea fowl and Tamworth terrine.

8 Dinner by Heston Blumenthal at the Mandarin Oriental Hyde Park

Those looking for a traditional Sunday roast won't find it at Heston’s two-Michelin starred restaurant. Instead, try experimental dishes such as Heston's signature meat fruit (mandarin chicken liver parfait) or octopus frumenty for starters, before getting stuck into a Hereford prime rib to share, with mustard ketchup and triple cooked chips is on offer. Leave room for the tipsy cake for dessert - that comes with juicy pineapples roasted in full view of the dining room.

9 The Pelican, Notting Hill

A refined, Michelin-starred pub, The Pelican won't serve you up your standard Sunday lunch. If there's only one roast on the menu, then it has to be a crowd-pleaser. Carrying the wieght of Sunday lunch expectations on its fleshy pink cuts, Audley Public House's roast beef is a traditional Sunday feast. The Lanesborough Grill put on a roast that is as grand as the hotel is. It's three superb courses and expect British cuisine at its traditional best.
