Burger fans rejoice! We’ve tracked down 8 of South West London’s best restaurants and bars serving up this tasty American classic
1 Honest Burger, Brixton, Clapham and Tooting
We asked our readers where they go for the best burger in South West London and they replied, without a shadow of doubt, Honest Burger. Having sampled several of the Brixton-born burger specials over the years, we’re inclined to agree. Look out for Honest special burgers including the Guacamole and Harissa and the Karma Cola burger (ginger pig dry aged beef, Karma Cola braised short-rib, smoked applewood cheddar, house pickles and green chilli coleslaw).
2 Burger Shack, Clapham, Streatham, Earlsfield and Wandsworth
Over the summer you may have seen Burger Shack pop up at Young’s pubs across London but the good news for burger-loving SW Londoners is that they’ve chosen no fewer than four SW London pubs to set up in permanently: The Windmill in Clapham, The Bull in Streatham, The Leather Bottle in Earlsfield and Wandsworth’s The Ship. Choose between four options or opt straight for The Streaky a classic British beef burger topped with Dingley Dell streaky maple bacon (unless you’re vegetarian, in which case The Veggie (beetroot, almond and lentil hash burger topped with goats’ cheese and Young’s ale onions) is the one for you.
3 Ben’s Canteen, Earlsfield and Battersea
Neighbourhood favourite Ben’s Canteen creates a winning burger in our book. The BC burger is made using unami-laden beef topped with salt beef, smoked cheese and the Ben’s Canteen house sauce and it is a Resident favourite. Not a meat eater? The veggie version combines sweet potato, spring onion and harrisa, topped with mayo and pickled red onions.
8 Hache
Family run burger mini-chain Hache first opened its doors in Camden in 2004 and was awarded the best burger in London award by Time Out in 2005. The second restaurant opened in Chelsea in 2007 and Clapham in 2011, with Shoreditch and Balham following suit.
5 Dip & Flip, Battersea and Wimbledon
Burgers with gravy? Yes, this is a thing and yes, we think you should try it. Dip & Flip’s smashed beef burgers are smothered in a moreish melted cheese and served in a sweet, light brioche bun. Or choose a beef or lamb shavings sandwiches (or is that defeating the object?). It’s messy but worth it.
6 Gourmet Burger Kitchen, Clapham, Battersea, Wandsworth, Putney and Wimbledon
The first Gourmet Burger Kitchen [GBK] opened in 2001 in Battersea (it was a game changer at the time) and now there’s over 60 GBK restaurants across the UK. Using 100% prime British beef, there’s a world of choice on GBK’s 2015 menu. Our favourites include the Blazing Sombrero (smoked Applewood cheese, chorizo relish, tortilla chips, house mayo, rocket and pickled onions in a brioche bun) and the Satay chicken burger.
7 Meat and Shake, Tooting
Meat & Shake does what it says on the tin and more with specially cured and flavoured meat for the burgers alongside par-cured beef ribs, crab claws, prawns and smoked chicken. Shakes include peanut butter, brownie, banana and salted caramel, while for those wanting something a bit different there will also be a selection of mocktails, including a watermelon mojito and ginger peach fizz.
8 Bodeans
For a naughty-but-nice American BBQ head to Bodeans. With three out of five restaurants in South-West London SW residents are spoilt for choice.
