East London has evolved into one of London’s best culinary pockets, with a wealth of creative eateries and restaurants calling the area home.

In particular, the area spanning Hackney Road to Columbia Road has a handful of gems, including Middle Eastern and Mediterranean restaurant Morito by The River Cafe team, and other spots like Sager and Wild and Laxerio.

You’ll find Mama Shelter along this strip too. The hotel is the brand’s first London venture following successful properties in Paris, LA and Dubai to name a few locations.

While there is appeal in the four star hotel’s unpretentious and affordable rooms, the real reason to visit is the food.

The menu is inspired by the hotel chain’s global locations, and includes the likes of California Rainbow Salad, a nod to Mama Shelter’s LA location, and Mama’s Fish N Chips - an east London favourite.

The menu is unfussy, with a focus on wholesome dishes and hearty flavours.

For mains, myself and my guest opted for the chicken schnitzel and the vegan cottage pie (the restaurant has a plethora of options for both vegans and veggies) - two comfort dishes that managed to embody the feel and taste of home cooking, much to my delight.

The real stars of the show, however, were the starters. I wouldn’t blame someone for ordering a range of dishes solely from the starters menu, with highlights including the crispy squid, burrata, yellowfin tuna and the mushroom aranaci.

There’s room to be as adventurous as you want, or of course to stick to more familiar favourites - the menu is plentiful and varied.

For dessert, you’ll find lightheaded options such as the dark chocolate brownie or creme brûlée, and the Kentucky flaming pecan pie - a boozy creation marrying together both nutty and sweet flavours.

On the subject of booze, this place is as much a place to sip cocktails as it is a restaurant - with tucked away areas and an alfresco terrace where nights can be spent enjoying spicy Tommy’s margaritas.

As far as interiors go, the restaurant couldn’t me more on brand if it tried. Expect old arcade game machines, tv’s showing the iconic Betty Boop and an abundance of retro lampshades hanging from the ceiling, all of which work in sync to achieve that effortlessly cool east London vibe.

If you’re looking for a laidback restaurant with soul food, real cooking and an affordable price tag, Mama Shelter has what you’re looking for.
