Who doesn’t love a doughnut? But not all doughnuts were created equal, so expend those calories wisely with The Resident’s pick of London’s best doughnuts…

1 Crosstown Doughtnuts, various locations
The art of the sugar-glazed ring has been raised by Crosstown Doughnuts. This lot scratch bakes yeast-raised sourdough doughnuts, with hand-rolled dough created daily at their branches all over town and filled with homemade jams, compotes, fillings, glazes and toppings. They also make entirely plant-based doughnuts, which picked up a PETA Vegan Food Award. As well as classic flavours like caramel and chocolate, they whip up seasonal specials such as Winter Fruit Crumble and Orange Blossom.

2 Doughnut Time, various locations
One of the best Australian exports since Neighbours, Doughnut Time now has multiple stores across London, boasting fabulous flavours such as Love at First Bite (their signature Nutella-filled doughnut dusted with cinnamon sugar), Snicki Minaj (chocolate glaze with caramel, chocolate swirls, peanuts and Snickers), and the vegan Ice Ice Bae Bae (vanilla buttercream, vegan cookie pieces, chocolate chip cookie dough and chocolate chips).

3 Dominique Ansel Bakery, Belgravia
All hail the inventor of the Cronut! Created by award-winning pastry chef Dominique Ansel and launched in his New York bakery in 2013, the doughnut-croissant hybrid that took Instagram by storm soon make its way to his London bakery. The bakery rolls out one new flavor of the Cronut pastry per month – take Nutella & Raspberry for February 2019, for example.

4 Dum Dum, Shoreditch & Croydon
The pop-up donutterie at Boxpark Shoreditch and Croydon bakes it’s goods instead of frying them and thus promises to be healthier – Dum Dum has even counted Tom Daley as one of its customers. Exciting flavours include banoffee, almond crème and pistachio and classic raspberry. And let’s not forget their take on the cronut – a baked croissant-cum-doughnut filled with ice cream!

5 St John’s Neal’s Yard Bakery, Seven Dials
St John was one of the first to glamourise the doughnut, and after plenty of market-hopping, the doughnuts now have a dedicated home at their Neal’s Yard bakery in Seven Dials. Fillings include fruit jams which are sometimes mixed with custards, like rhubarb and custard or salted caramel custard. You can still grab them from the counters at the St John restaurants in Smithfields and Spitalfields, too.

6 Bills, various locations
Our favourite neighbourhood chain has a seriously crowd-pleasing menu that never puts a foot wrong, doughnuts included. Its mini cinnamon doughnuts with fresh strawberries and warm chocolate dipping sauce tempt us every time we visit.
