SEMLEY AND GLUTCH COMMONS
Wessex Water has applied to the Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs for consent under section 38 of the Commons Act 2006 to carry out restricted works on Semley and Gutch Common. The Planning Inspectorate will decide the application on behalf of the Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs.
Trie proposed temporary works are to replace the existing water main to improve the water supply to the surrounding area. The water main will be replaced using the construction methods of pipe burst and open cut There will be two open cut sections which will be 30m long in the area of Tokes Lane and 75m long in the area of Sem Hill, both will have a working width of 0.5m. The approximate total area of works required will be 52.5 square metres. They will be constructed by excavating approximately 20m at a time, with this area being fenced. The pipe burst section, which will be 465m long, will have a launch/reception pit every 90m, with each pit being 3m x 2m and having safety fencing on each side. The approximate area of works for each pit will be six square metres. The open cut sections in total will take approximately 3 weeks and the pipe burst section will take approximately 5 weeks. The works will be fenced off using "Heras" type steel fencing for health & safety and site security purposes for the duration of the works. The excavation will be covered when not in use and will be back-filled once the new pipe is laid.
