M27 AND M3 MOTORWAYS (NEAR SOUTHAMPTON)
TEMPORARY TRAFFIC RESTRICTIONS
Notice is hereby given that Highways England Company Limited has made an Order on the M27 and M3 Motorways in the County of Hampshire, and the Unitary Authority of the City of Southampton, under Section 14(1)(a) of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984 because works are proposed to be executed on the road. The effect of the Order is, in phases, to:-
1. authorise the 24-hour weekend closure of -
(a) both carriageways of the M27 between Junction 3 (M271 Junction 2) and Junction 4 (M3 Junction 14), and all slip roads leading to and from this length;
(b) the road leading to the coast-bound link road (connecting the M3 to the eastbound carriageway of the M27) of the M3 at Junction 13 (A335);
(c) the road leading from the coast-bound carriageway of the M3 to Chilworth Roundabout (A27/A33) at Junction 14 (M27 Junction 4); and
(d) the road leading from the link road (connecting the coast-bound carriageway of the M3 to the westbound carriageway
of the M27) at Junction 14 (M27 Junction
4) to the exit slip road leading from the coast-bound carriageway of the M3 to
Chilworth Roundabout (A27/A33).
2. impose a 24-hour 50 mph speed limit on -
(a) the eastbound carriageway of the M27 between a point 115 metres east of the exit slip road at Junction 3 (M271 Junction 2) and 600 metres east of the centreline of Romsey Road (A3057) overbridge; and
(b) the westbound carriageway of the M27 between the centreline of Rownhams Lane overbridge and a point 165 metres west of the exit slip road at Junction 3
(M271 Junction 2).
3. permit the 24-hour use of the hard shoulder on both carriageways of the M27 between Rownham services and Junction 3
(M271 Junction 2).
These measures are in the interests of road safety while contractors undertake replacement of Romsey Road Overbridge, various works within the highway boundary, highways maintenance works, and all associated works. It is expected that the work will last for approximately 15 months starting on or after Monday 28th May 2018. The 24-hour weekend closure will take place between 22:00 on Friday and 06:00 on Monday (maximum period). The closure will be expected to take place on the weekend beginning the 6th July 2018. This date is subject to change depending on weather conditions, and there may be the need for additional weekend closures. The Order will come into force on 26th May 2018 and have a maximum duration of eighteen months. Traffic affected by the closures will be diverted via other junctions of the M3 and M27 or by using the A27, A34, A36, A303, A3057, and the A3090. The diversion route will vary depending on the closure in force. The temporary speed limits, hard shoulder running, closures, and diversion routes will be clearly indicated by traffic signs when they are in operation during the works period.
