ANNOUNCEMENT OF INTENTION NOT TO PREPARE AN ENVIRONMENTAL STATEMENT (Regulation 5 of the Environmental Impact Assessment (Land Drainage Improvement Works) Regulations 1999 as amended by SI 2017/585 Howsham Fish Pass
The Environment Agency gives notice that it proposes to carry out improvement works on the River Derwent in Howsham at the weir next to Howsham Mill (NGR SE 72957 62832). The proposed improvement works will involve the following: construction of a Larinier fish pass with separate eel and lamprey tiles on the weir, and adjustment to the canoe chute to manage flows across the weir.
The Environment Agency considers that the improvement works are not likely to have significant effects on the environment and does not intend to prepare an environmental statement in respect of them. With reference to Schedule 2 of the Environmental Impact Assessment (Land Drainage Improvement Works) Regulations 1999 (as amended), the main reasons for not intending to prepare an environmental statement are that the characteristics of the improvement works, their location and the type and characteristics of the potential for impact do not pose significant risk to the environment. As a result of the works, species offish and lamprey migration will be improved, supporting the overall River Derwent Restoration Plan.
The timing of the construction and the method for building have been chosen to minimise possible adverse effects on the environment.

Any person wishing to make representations in relation to the likely environmental effects of the proposed improvement works should do so, in writing, to the address specified below, within 30 days of the date of publication of this notice.
