ANNOUNCEMENT OF INTENTION NOT TO PREPARE AN ENVIRONMENTAL STATEMENT (Regulation 5 of the Environmental Impact Assessment (Land Drainage Improvement Works) Regulations 1999 as amended by SI 2005/1399 and SI 2006/618
Port Clarence and Greatham South FAS
The Environment Agency gives notice that it proposes to carry out improvement works to the flood defences on the North bank of the river Tees, Middlesbrough Reach in Port Clarence at Wilton Group land west of the main quayside located at National Grid Reference NZ 49241 21850, a distance of 35m. The proposed improvement works will involve the following: At Port Clarence works has recently been undertaken to construct a flood embankment. However in one location, in the west of the site the flood embankment is constructed on a river bank, which has been subjected to increased scour. The area is where the river changes direction, and there is a history of erosion along this frontage. Design work has been undertaken to stabilise the river bank in the most sustainable way possible - using "estuary edges" guidance and involving planting etc. The proposed improvement works include repair to the embankment, by re-profiling the existing slope and applying Rock mattresses on the lower sections of the embankment and planting on the top half. The proposed works are small in scale, 317m2, and involve the restoration of erosion protection and the creation of habitat, so they are likely to have a positive environmental impact. The Environment Agency considers that the improvement works are not likely to have significant effects on the environment and does not intend to prepare an environmental statement in respect of them. Environmental information concerning the improvement works is available in the form of Request for EIA Screening Opinion letter from Mott Mac Donald. This is held at The Environment Agency address below and is available for viewing during office hours of 9.00 to 17.00. Any person wishing to make representations in relation to the likely environmental effects of the proposed improvement works should do so, in writing, to the address specified below, within 28 days of the date of publication of this notice.
