Western Esplanade, Improvement Works to the Flood Defences
Notice ID: MFN0675982
ENVIRONMENT AGENCY
ANNOUNCEMENT OF INTENTION NOT TO PREPARE AN ENVIRONMENTAL STATEMENT
Regulation 5 of the Environmental Impact Assessment Land Drainage Improvement Works (Amended) Regulations 1999 SI 1999/1783
Canvey Island Southern Shoreline Revetment Project
The Environment Agency gives notice that it proposes to carry out improvement works to the flood defences on the River Thames in Canvey Island, Essex between Thorney Bay in the West (TQ79642 82526) and a point south of the Island Yacht Club in the east where the existing revetment ties in with rock armour (TQ82201 83112), a distance of 3.2 kilometres. The proposed improvement works will involve the following:
•Works to renew the revetment, including improved riverward access works (widening of the riverward maintenance track at narrowing pinch points) and the replacement of all riverward foreshore access steps
•The removal of the Chapman Sands Jetty (to facilitate the works to the revetment in that area)
•Temporary construction compound areas to support the works above
The Environment Agency considers that the improvement works are not likely to have significant effects on the environment and does not intend to prepare an environmental statement in respect of them. Screening Opinions have been issued by Castle Point Borough Council and the Marine Management Organisation confirming the works do not require the production of an Environmental Impact Assessment under the Town and Country Planning (Environmental Impact Assessment) Regulations 2017 and the Marine Works (Environmental Impact Assessment) (Amendment) Regulations 2017 respectively. In addition, an Environmental Report has been written by TEAM2100 for the project, which provides details of the environmental surveys completed, assessments undertaken and mitigation and improvements which has been included in both the construction phase and final design to protect and enhance the local environment.
Copies of these and more information about the project, can be viewed via the project website at: Canvey Island southern shoreline revetment project - information page - Environment Agency - Citizen Space (environment-agency.gov.uk).
Any person wishing to make representations in relation to the likely environmental effects of the proposed improvement works should do so, in writing, to the address specified below, within 30 days of the date of publication of this notice.
