Southampton City Council has applied to the Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs for consent under section 38 of the Commons Act 2006/section 23(2) of the National Trust Act 1971 /article 12 of the Ministry of Housing and Local Government Provisional Order Confirmation (Greater London Parks and Open Spaces) Act 1967* to carry out restricted works on Central Parks Common land.
The proposed works are: To reduce the paved areas of the park and increase the soft green landscaped areas. Existing path network is 3345m2, our proposed path area will be 2793m2. We would achieve this by removing two spur paths leading from the central path to Queens Park Terrace and return them to grass.
Resurface and restore existing historic path layout. Extend the central path to the east with a small additional spur to improve access to the new park extension over the existing car park.
Decommission the existing, adjoining car park and return to green open space, integrating it into Queens Park. Enclose new space (outside of the Common registration) with 84.3m of railings and extend these railings to reinforce the existing hedge enclosing the park.
Replant gaps in the existing hedge and add some perimeter shrub planting to the south of the site to shield from Platform road traffic, which is predicted to increase with restriction of traffic on Queens Park Terrace to the north planned to improve access to the park from the north.
