NOTICE OF WORKS: SEMLEY AND GLUTCH COMMONS
Wessex Water has applied to the Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs for consent under section 38 of the Commons Act 2006 to carry out restricted works on Semley and Gutch Common. The Planning Inspectorate will decide the application on behalf of the Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs.
The proposed temporary works (approximately 4 weeks in duration) are to install a new water pipeline from Littledown Reservoir to Broad Oak Farm to remedy existing elevated nitrate levels in the water supply which can't be sustainably treated due to existing network constraints. The water main will be constructed using a traditional open cut method requiring excavation of a 0.6m wide trench from adjoining fields, crossing common land and highway into adjoining field the opposite side. These essential works will involve stripping of topsoil within the working area for a total of 4 weeks, including reinstatement. A total working area of approx. 200m2 will be required within the common land approx. 8m width by 25m length. Once construction of the new pipe is completed the land will be reinstated to its original condition; no permanent above ground works are proposed. During the 4-week construction period across the common land area the working area will be fenced off, for health and safety and security reasons, with Heras style fencing.
