The Environment Agency gives notice that it proposes to carry out improvement works to the flood defences on River Adur in Shoreham-by-Sea, West Sussex between Brighton City Airport's southern and northern extents occurring at the embankment to the east of Cecil Pashley Way and forming a boundary with the River. The northern extent of works is (NGR TQ2065505546 and the southern extent is NGRTQ2078305200, a distance of circa 0.25km kilometres. The proposed improvement works will involve the following: reinforcing the centre of the embankment, with piling, and reinstating the embankment landscaping as current or better. No piling will be visible on completion. The Environment Agency considers that the improvement works are not likely to have significant effects on the environment and does not intend to prepare an environmental statement in respect of them. The Works are Permitted Development.
A section of 200m of embankment will be subject to reinforcement through piling through the centre of the crest path at vertical alignment. Enabling works will commence after 15th February 2022. Pile driving activity will commence after 27th March 2022. Reinstatement of the path to equivalent or better standard will be made on completion. Pollinator resource on the landward bank will be reinstated to an existing or better standard. The saltmarsh will not be accessible as this is protected habitat.
Working Hours are to be consented (with avoidance of weekend working except at last resort). The path, a Public Flight of Way will be closed for the duration as enabling and main works are undertaken for the purpose of public safety due to the radius of impact driving noise and absence of alternative surfaced routes.
Adur and Worthing Local Planning Authority have been consulted on the Environment Agency's Permitted Development works and associated Consents. An application in regard to CRoW Act assent for works adjacent to the Site of Special Scientific Interest is submitted to Natural England.
