ROAD TRAFFIC REGULATION ACT 1984 -SECTION 14(1)(a)
THE A1(M) AND A66(M) MOTORWAYS (A1(M) JUNCTION 53 TO JUNCTION 58) (TEMPORARY RESTRICTION AND PROHIBITION OF TRAFFIC) ORDER 2021 NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN that Highways England Company Limited intends to make an Order on the A1 (M) Motorway and the A66(M) Motorway, in the County of North Yorkshire and the Metropolitan Borough of Darlington, to enable bridge maintenance works to be carried out in safety.
The works are expected to start on Monday 11th October 2021 for 29 weeks, or until completed, and will take place overnight between 8pm and 6am.
The effect of the Order will be to close, at times during the works,:
(i) the A1 (M) northbound carriageway from the exit slip road at Junction 53 to the entry slip road at Junction 56, a distance of 3440 metres;
(ii) the A1 (M) southbound carriageway from the exit slip road at Junction 58 to the entry slip road at Junction 56, a distance of 11900 metres;
(iii) the A66(M) westbound carriageway from its roundabout junction with Bridge Road (Blackwell Roundabout), at Blackwell, to its junction with the A1 (M), a distance of 3070 metres; and
(iv) any slip road leading to or from the lengths of the A1 (M) described in (i) and (ii) above;
During the closures, suitably signed alternative routes will be available at all times.
It will also be necessary, for 24 hours a day, at times during the works, to:
(i) impose a temporary 50mph speed restriction on the A1 (M) northbound carriageway from
a point 1,000 metres southwest of the tip of the nosing at its junction with the exit slip road at Junction 56, to a point 240 metres northeast of the tip of the nosing at its junction with the entry slip road at Junction 56, a distance of 2135 metres;
(ii) impose a temporary 50mph speed restriction on the A1 (M) southbound carriageway from a point 1,450 metres northeast of the tip of the nosing at its junction with the exit slip road at Junction 56 to a point 115 metres south of the tip of the nosing at its junction with the entry slip road at Junction 56, a distance of 2270 metres;
(iii) impose a temporary 50mph speed restriction on the A1 (M) northbound exit slip road at Junction 56, from the tip of the nosing at its junction with the A1(M), to its junction with the A6055, a distance of 520 metres;
(iv) impose a temporary 50mph speed restriction on the A1 (M) northbound entry slip road at Junction 56, from its junction with the A6055 to a point 200 metres northeast of the tip of the nosing at its junction with the A1 (M), a distance of 530 metres;
(v) impose a temporary 50mph speed restriction on the A1 (M) southbound exit slip road at Junction 56, from a point 150 metres northeast of the tip of the nosing at its junction with the A1 (M), to its junction with the A6055, a distance of 360 metres;
(vi) close various lanes of the A1 (M) northbound from a point 110 metres northeast of the tip of the nosing at its junction with the exit slip road at Junction 56, to a point 120 metres southwest of the tip of the nosing at its junction with the entry slip road at Junction 56, a distance of 670 metres, and allow vehicles to use the hard shoulder;
(vii) close various lanes of the A1 (M) southbound from a point 550 metres northeast of the tip of the nosing at its junction with the exit slip road at Junction 56, to a point 115 metres northeast of the tip of the nosing at its junction with the entry slip road at Junction 56, a distance of 1365 metres, and allow vehicles to use the hard shoulder; and
(viii) ban vehicles with an overall width exceeding 6'6" in lane of the above lengths of carriageway as described in (vi) and (vii).
Traffic signs will indicate the extent of the restrictions (which will not apply to emergency service vehicles or special forces vehicles) and prohibitions (which will not apply to emergency service vehicles or vehicles being used in connection with the said works or for winter maintenance or traffic officer purposes).
